This is a disaster – THREE big birthdays coming up and then Christmas. How expensive.
My daughter is totally in control of her impending birthday and what she wants. Distributing lists. Sending links and emails.
What she really wants very badly is her belly button pierced. I have been saying a straight NO for some time now, but when I had coffee with a girlfriend yesterday she told me that I needed to consider it a little more. Speak to a few more people. Let go of my own judgements. My main concern is for her wellbeing obviously and I don’t want her to get an infection or for it to be uncomfortable and I think she is FAR too young. But that, as my friend pointed out applies in two years time as well…..ANYWAY – anybody got an opinion on belly piercings? Are they more likely to get infected than other piercings?
She also has Snake Venom spot cream on her list and is beginning to mumble about a bloody micro pig. Good grief. Why is nothing easy anymore? Why don’t they all want stone tumblers and flower presses like I got for my 15th birthday.

October 24, 2010I don’t have the belly button piercing myself, been tempted but I can be a bit of a disaster zone so I was mostly worried about it getting caught. I have my tongue pierced though (at 20)and I love it and if you get plastic balls you don’t have to worry about the tooth enamel problem, and at least I can take it out for formal things and no/one is any the wiser. All I know is they do get infected, but I guess probably not more than anywhere else. I think they can look really pretty if you have a nice enough belly. The only thing I would say though is like some piercings e.g. eyebrows, belly button piercings have a tendency to grow out so you lose the piercing after a few years. Maybe say she can when she’s 16?

October 24, 2010can b difficult…l told my girl at 18, earring yes but tats and other pearcings l felt were for older kids….at 16 she had it done in the february..l didnt ‘see’ it and only my her error until july!!!
may be a rethink….but 14 is for me too young….its legal for them at 16 apparently l checked….but not tats…

October 25, 2010In the scheme of things, a few piercings is harmless and for some, a necessary rite of passage. There will be other more important things to hold your ground over. Having said that 1. wait til it’s legal (you have to give your consent if they are under 16) and 2. make sure that it is the cleanest and most hygienic ‘parlour’ in the world. ‘Our’ belly button piercing lasted for 3 years. What you want to avoid at all costs is a dodgy place that lets them do it under age. The risk of infection will be high and I have seen the results of an infected piercing. Shame I haven’t got a photo.

October 25, 2010Would say definitely too young and yes, they do often get infected. Best solution is Savlon antiseptic spray.
I had mine done at 34 and was fortunate to have minimum discomfort. Still have it but wear the slimmest and tiniest of gold rings through it.
I did have three piercings in my left ear though, but even then they were not done ’til I was 18.
I live a very sheltered life.

October 25, 2010I love my belly button piercing. Regret my two (albeit discreet) tattoos. Every once in a while, I still get a little soreness/tenderness in the belly button but usually only if I’ve worn something that ‘caught’ on it. Now my childhood friend/partner in crime got her piercing the same day I did (15 years ago) and her body rejected it. She was in a lot of pain. The funny thing is that I have extremely sensitive ears and can only wear certain earrings while she can wear all of the fabulously cheap & tacky earrings without any problems.

February 17, 2012Hey, well iv had mine for about a year now and I got it done when I was 14 and I’m 15 now. It took me forever to convince my parents to let me do it but eventually I got it down with my friends. I think it’s totally fine like if you lOok around sooo many people have it down and it’s not like it’s on her face it means anything sexual. Did u listen to her point of view at all? Or let her give you her reason why she wants it dun? I think you should totally let her get it dun while she’s still young! My parents are really strict and won’t even let me get my nose pierced but they let me get my bellybutton. As long as she cleans it and looks after it then I don’t c a reason why she soul dent get it dun but it takes a while to heal and gets infected very easily so just make sure she takes care of it if she gets it dun! Like it barly hurts and they are really cute and there is such a huge selection of rings to choose some. I live mine and now when I c a belly w.o a pricing I think it looks reply plain.

February 20, 2012I just turned 16 and im getting mine done in two days. I think 14 is a bit young but she should be able to get it when she’s 15. I pierced m y own nose when I was 15 and even though it healed great and everything I wish I would have waited. But I love it now, and my mom even took me to get a tattoo. But I heard belly piercings infect easily and to clean in with seasalt 3 times a day. I took my mom to get hers done a week ago, and We clean it 3 times daily. They take about 3 months to heal, but are cute.
