This is a funny old space of time don’t you think? – the bit between Christmas and New Year. It is clear that most of London has taken the whole lot off and made the most of the slightly dead time in the middle and buggered off somewhere for a proper break. I went out locally for a drink with a few friends last night and it was like a ghost town. We went to three different pubs in the area and they were all empty and closing early. BORING. Everybody is somewhere else. WHERE??

I on the other hand, in my capacity of working woman have been in the office for the last few days – which has actually been great because it’s quiet and therefore nobody can see me trying to work out how to use the telephone or turn on the computer.

and I just LOVE London – even in the rain …. look at the view on my way in – who couldn’t be inspired by that:-

However, it has come to my attention that I need to improve. My commuting skills are least getting a little better. I now have trainers, a back pack and a determined look about me. I know where to stand on the platform and I don’t ask random strangers why there are so many people on the platform – has there been an accident or the trains been cancelled and they say “no, love, this is what commuting looks like”. But, I am going to have to get better at dressing in the dark. Normally, if I’m teaching a class I have time to take my children to school in any old rubbish (dressing gown almost) and then get back to change. Now that I have to travel further I have to be more organised. I have to find a way to know what is going to look acceptable without 85 changes of clothes. I have to have clothes in the right place in the first place. The same applies to make-up. I am going to have to find a way to put make up on a tired bleary face in the morning that then looks vaguely natural later in the office.

For example, I turned up at the office yesterday and got on with stuff. Went to make a coffee and popped to the loo. Discovered my underpants were inside out. Never mind. Looked in mirror. Hideous 80’s blusher mistake and blue eyeliner instead of brown. Cat sitting on shoulders. Literally I got that much of a shock. There was so much cat hair on my top it was like the cat was actually lying across my shoulders.

This is not good. I must find a way to become a professional.

Luckily kids were all still in bed when I got home. Well….not quite but almost. They’re in spectacular holiday mode with lovely long lie ins that they all need. Particularly my youngest son who now has to get up really early to get to school. So of course, as is the way, everybody is a little bit ill. Especially all the lot that have come back from university. All my son’s friends have been ill and staying with us. Coughs, colds and a touch of norovirus thrown in for good measure. It is getting to the point when I dig out that face mask I was given by the doctor when my daughter had swine flu.
