As a holiday treat I took my children to see “The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time” – the theatre production of the bestselling novel by Mark Haddon which has re-located to the Gielgud Theatre – we had tickets last year but two days before we were due to see it the ceiling fell down in the theatre – thankfully nobody was badly hurt, but we were given a refund.
My son was really keen to go – “my favourite book” he said, but I had to remind him it was his only book. But still.
We all loved it. Very striking production with a brilliant set design. Very bare, monochrome mathematical grid on which was projected diagrams of maps, cities and sketches, it turned into an escalator (that’s an elevator for my US readers) and a train station and overall represented the internal workings of Christopher’s complex mind. He has something akin to Asperger’s syndrome or autism and see’s the world in a very different light to most of us.
Graham Butler was astonishing as Christopher as the scenes unfolded as a story within a story narrated by his teacher. It was funny, moving and dynamic and a stark reminder about how families can be torn apart by the difficulties they face concerning children with special needs.
We wandered back via Picadilly and stumbled upon Jamie Oliver’s pop up diner – well worth a visit if you like burgers!
