Reports claim famous TV chef Nigella Lawson will be legally split from her art collector husband Charles Saatchi by the end of the month. Well how come then it takes “normal” couples months to divorce?

Although I guess if you’re happy just to walk away with whatever you personally own then perhaps it can be quick – there is something to be said for the fact that divorce is only quick (and less painful all round) if you are either very, very poor or very, very rich – and of course Nigella and Charles are most definitely in the very, very rich category.

It’s not like that for us “normal” people who have to battle to find a fair way to split the shared life down the middle – children, possessions, houses, finances, friends, photographs, music, pets….the list is painful and endless – “fair” is not something that both sides see as the same thing unfortunately so it can be protracted, unbelievably traumatic and ultimately expensive.

I would have thought that normally a divorce can take up to a year – particularly if you’ve both got lawyers – funnily enough they have other jobs to do too and I recall endlessly waiting for replies.

What’s your experience? Did the lawyers help you to get a fair deal? Were they quick enough?
