Happy birthday to my 30 year old son!

OMG!!  I have a THIRTY YEAR OLD SON!!!  Whilst I knew there was no point in looking up what you’re allowed to do once you are 30, because it’s basically everything, I googled it anyway and there was advice on pensions, saving for the future, buying houses, having babies…all those grown up serious things I did years ago and it’s made me feel….very old.

Old, but happy.  Happy to have a child who is well on his way in life and one that still finds a lot of joy in life every day.  He’s got a good job and a fabulous partner and maybe he’ll buy a house at some point in the near future when the economy recovers (if it does).  He’s been a joy to watch growing up and stepping out and my job as his mother has changed dramatically.  I’m of course more than a little bit surplus to requirements these days as he gets on with his life, but I hope that he still wants to hang out with me from time to time.  We had a lot of celebrations leading up to Christmas with friends and family for his birthday and it felt like I ended up crawling to the end of the year!  It was the first Christmas without my mother and their grandmother, but with all the parties in between we all got through it with a lot of happiness and laughter and I’m quite sure she would have approved.

This is just a short post to note his big day and to say how proud I am of him and all that he has achieved so far.  I did a speech at his party, not only about all his achievements, but about what a great big brother he is to his two younger siblings and what a fabulous son he’s been too!

Exciting times for him ahead I hope and I couldn’t love him any more!

Here he is as a baby – a sepia photo that looks like it was taken a century ago…back when my parents still lived in Hong Kong and we were living in Australia, having a bath in the kitchen sink!:-

Back when my feet were bigger than his:-

And he was (and still is) always smiling:-

And taller than his younger brother:-

But we still partied together:-

This was at my 50th:-

Then things changed and his younger brother grew loads!:-

Here we all are at his 30th!  Still enjoying each others company – which makes me very happy:-

And at his actual birthday…when we had a lovely meal out together and he looks like he’s trying to ask someone to help him!  Happy days!
