HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO YOU ALL….
This year, I somehow managed to spectacularly mess up the Mother’s Day plans. I have an American diary so thought that Mothers Day wasn’t until May. So I was delighted when a well known hotel miraculously had availability for May the 11th at 3pm – it’s the first time I’ve booked anything that far in advance. Anyway, the penny began to drop on about Thursday when I was puzzled as to why all the shops were doing mothers day promotions.
Still, I’m going to keep that booking and try and see if I can persuade my mother to come up for tea anyway. Of course when I called her on Saturday to explain why she wasn’t going to be getting a card this year all she said was “well I’ve at least already got two” and then my brother texted to say “hear you tried to pretend you thought it was American mothers day”….
Didn’t go down very well.
Anyway, every time I say Happy Mother’s Day to her she says “IT’S NOT MOTHER’S DAY IT’S MOTHERING SUNDAY WHICH IS A RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL ABOUT GIRLS GOING HOME TO SEE THEIR FAMILIES NOT THIS AMERICAN COMMERCIAL CRAP” and so I slightly wonder why she’s even a little bit annoyed I failed to send a card.
My children were a little scattered this year – but instead I woke up on Sunday morning to a gaggle of girls all discussing last night’s party. So we all had breakfast together then they went home to their mother’s and my daughter and I went for a walk and she bought me a drink at the pub!! That was the point at which my father said “I didn’t really think my children had very much to say for themselves until they were old enough to buy me a drink in the pub”. I also got cupcakes and a card. Then my youngest son came home and was a whirling dervish in the kitchen making cakes and puddings and other delicious suitably appropriate Mother’s Day fare.
Here is the cupcake my daughter bought me from The Hummingbird Bakery – cute!:-

Oldest son sent me a text.
So, as usual, I’m just completely happy to be a mother – the e-card two of my children sent me was the same message which was lovely – they both said “Home is Where Your Mum is”…not sure how long that message will last, but happy with it as long as it does.
But I dedicate this post to my mother, because I think she’s being very brave. It’s been a few years now since my father died and she misses him hugely. Life has changed dramatically for her and continues to do so. She’s got to sell her house, move closer to us, find a new life for herself and that is hard at any age, especially when you don’t want to do it and have to do it all by yourself. She’s also got to have another back operation because she’s in constant pain. Many seemingly almost insurmountable difficulties, but she keeps going day by day and is remarkably cheerful with it.
So, a toast to my lovely mother – who just needs to hurry up and move closer so that I can hand deliver my cards on time and not need to explain what an idiot I am. Although it’s amazing what you can do on a Mac these days:-
