Who is going to win??
I watched the very harrowing film “The Impossible” over the weekend. We all remember where we were when that Tsunami hit on Boxing Day 2004 – what I was surprised about however, was the incredibly narrow Western view of the disaster that killed possibly over 300,000 people. There weren’t even any statistics highlighted in the film about the astronomical number of people who died in the disaster -. Unbelievable. This is the true story of a Spanish family staying at a hotel just behind the beach and I won’t spoil it for you….strong performances all round – the child actor who played Lucas was brilliant – Euan McGregor has done something strange to his teeth so I couldn’t quite get my head round that, Naomi Watts was very realistic and the filming of when the Tsunami hit is brilliant – excellent visual effects, with the scenes of devastation well, devastating….
However, I’m afraid she wouldn’t get my vote for best actress. That would have to go to Jennifer Lawrence in “Silver Line Playbook” because it was a far more complex and interesting role to play and she did a spectacular job in what was an excellent film.
Other nominations I am going to be rude about?
“Life Of Pi” is a spectacular film, no doubt about it and if you loved the book and delighted in all that mystery and magic then you will be delighted with Ang Lee’s depiction which creates exactly that same sense of wonder. However if you thought the book was weird, like I did, then you will probably think the film is weird too and being a realist, whilst I enjoyed the visual imagery, I’m afraid I just don’t really get it – and I like to get things in life.
So. Nope. Not that film either.
ARGO though. Now there’s a film. Completely brilliant. I thought. A dramatization of the 1980 joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of revolutionary Iran, directed by and starring Ben Affleck (who looked like a very pleasing 70’s porn star). Full of suspense, humour, drama and intelligence. I don’t believe he is up for Best Producer which is a shame, and I would have given Alan Arkin the award for Best Supporting Actor but….
Nope, he can’t have it because I’m going to give it to Robert De Niro for his BRILLIANT performance in Silver Lining Playbook as a father with OCD and issues. Very moving indeed.

Oh, and I suspect that Daniel Day Lewis will get best actor for Lincoln, which looks like an incredibly difficult role to play. I haven’t seen that one yet and I’m certainly not going to see Django because knowing Tarantino it will be horrifically violent and I can’t cope.
