It’s not just running that turns my youngest child into a rant monster. It’s walking too. He just doesn’t see the point. I tried to encourage him to walk through the park to the shops – about a kilometre in total. What a bloody effort.

Every third step was another complaint. Shoes hurt. Feet hurt. Blisters. Sore legs. Injuries caused by me during our previous running sessions. Then we moved on to how boring walking was “all you get to look as are trees and boring leaves AND what’s more had I noticed how dirty it was everywhere – just brown mud EVERYWHERE”.

He cheered up slightly when I had to stop and work out why my left leg was causing me mild discomfort. There was a large mystery lump behind my knee. After some fiddling, it turned out to be a pair of underpants. They took quite a long time to remove as every time somebody went passed he shrieked at me stop being so embarrassing and look as if I was taking a photo of something.

Anyway, I managed to distract him by giving him my phone and getting him to take some photos of our walk. He’s done a pretty good job. We saw some interesting things:-

When I was little (and the old King was alive) all ‘decent’ girls carried a spare length of knicker elastic when they went out, I can give you the address of a good supplier…!

This confirms my girls view that a mother’s sole purpose in this world is to cause maximum embarrassment.

I have to admit to making the same sort of comments as your youngest when I’m out running. Although I haven’t been out running for years because no one will come with me now !!! You should have got him to take a picture of your “lump”. That does sound funny and I can imgine his reaction. Embarrassing our children can be such fun !!
(Thank you too for your lovely, kind, constructive message on my blog – what you say makes a lot of sense and I realy appreciate it x)
