Well so far so good with my son safely deposited at university. We managed to stuff all his belongings for the next year into my tiny little car. It was quite fun spotting all the other cars driving along the motorways stuffed to the gunnels with trainers and mirrors. I’m pretty sure you could tell the sex of the students by the amount of stuff they had in the back. My son packed the morning we were leaving and it took precisely 10 minutes to unpack everything. He only had one poster (Sunderland) to stick on the wall.
We’ve been talking everyday and it sounds like he’s successfully got through his first week and signed up to various new things during the Fresher’s Fair. It’s always a worry when they commit to lots of clubs – endless sports, languages, even the army is on offer….I remember getting a bit carried away and spread myself a bit too thinly.
All I want is for him to be happy, so I’m keeping everything crossed for next week when his lectures start and things begin to get moving. This week is all about clubbing, drinking, bonding and finding out where the nearest Asda, MacDonalds and KFC resides it seems.
So my little nest is rather more spacious than usual with only one baby chick living at home with me. It’s a whole new era and I don’t really like it, given how much time I’ve spent with all my children as a single parent. Need to go out and find things to do. I’m working on it…
But the good news is that I’m sleeping better. It’s definitely a thing for parents to find they sleep better when their children are not under the same roof. We still worry, naturally, but there is nothing we can do when they step out of our jurisdiction but hope that they occasionally think “what would my mum say if she saw me now?”
We can but hope…
