The Pig In The Wall is a little boutique hotel tucked away in the medieval walls of historic Southampton.

It’s the smallest hotel in The Pig collective, but certainly not the runt of the litter. Like all the other hotels in the group, it feels like a family affair, run by a great team, promoting a great ethos by offering a supremely welcoming, homely, deeply comfortable and cosy environment that is entirely unpretentious. The rustic wooden tables, low sofa’s and cosy corners are a mix of old and new and together with the china are often mismatched, creating a home from home feel. The communal area was buzzy and resplendent with potted herbs from their kitchen garden (although given the size of this one, they get their produce from the main hotel in Brockenhurst).
LOCATION
This little Piggy is located right by the Isle of Wight ferry and cruise terminal – it’s a very urban location but easily doable from London, being only an hour and a half away. You have to walk across a big road to get to the sea and the cruise terminal, but the sunset made it all look pretty gorgeous.

GENERAL VIBE
All extremely relaxing. Small but perfectly formed – there’s only one communal room for your breakfast, lunch, general drinking and dinner needs. But it was buzzy all day and full for the evening dining experience, with mainly couples. Everyone was very friendly.

TEAM
They were excellent. Very friendly and happy to help. Seemed to work very well together, run by an excellent, hardworking Manager (who’s name I forgot to ask, but she’s in the photo to the left).
WINE
A perfectly adequate wine list consisting of 10 whites, 7 reds and 2 rosés from a wide ranging selection of countries. Prices for the white’s ranged from £24.50 – £61.00 per bottle which was excellent value. Their “Turning Heads” NZ Sauvignon Blanc was £36.00 – very reasonable.
FOOD
Their dinner menu was very limited – 4 mains, 2 of which are vegetarian – so we had the option for sausage and mash or Pollock. I’d have preferred a few other choices – Shepherd’s Pie for example – nothing that needs too much work (as their kitchen is small). We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal though – great starters and my favourite Affogato for pudding and it was only £60 per head.
Their breakfast was spectacular. They offer a grazing table with lots of options, but you can also order the “Piggy Pots” for £20 which for what we got and how it tasted was excellent value.
