My gorgeous, beautiful, bubbly friend who had to have a mastectomy just two weeks ago was drinking champagne at home last night having been given the all clear. The gruelling 6 hour operation where they took fat from her stomach and stuffed it in her breast and then reconnected all the blood vessels has worked. She now has a flat stomach and a huge breast. There is a bit of tweaking still to do but she’s completely delighted and is looking forward to persuading the surgeons to sort out her thighs, maybe stuff some other bits in her lips and cheeks, possibly ask if they can resculpt her bottom…..
Joking aside, our whole community has come together for her. She has been overwhelmed by more than 50 cards, more flowers than she’s ever seen, more home cooked food, help, love and support. Even I of the “what’s an ironing board?” mentality went and ironed things in manner of hopeless person. She generally irons everything in seconds. It took me hours to iron two things and when I was there trying to get her to sit quietly whilst I was useful my youngest son over-excited her daughter so much there was mayhem.
I don’t know why she has been blown away by all the support – she has this bizarre idea that she’s a bit of a fraud – looking at her in the hospital the day after the operation with drains coming out all over the place she still made the effort to smile and joke and had already managed to repaint her toenails – regardless of a wound that stretched the entire length of her stomach, which cheered her up hugely.
When she told us all yesterday that her tests were clear I think we probably all shed a few tears of relief – her text said “All clear – woo hoo! xx” Her mother, who never cries was sobbing…..it just says it all. Her surgeon told her that she was “the model patient”. She left the hospital in under a week and is making huge progress every day. She really has truly been amazing. Laughing, joking and being so immensely brave. Just getting on with what she has to do with a positivity we are all full of admiration for.
So, my lovely friend – you are an inspiration to many and we are ALL looking forward to many nights of celebration and “WOO HOO’S” all round.
