His paltry update to me this morning also mentioned what he would be doing in the next few days and his inability to appreciate objects of astounding beauty:-
“going to siem reap in 4 nights to Angkor wat which is just lots of temples…BORING..hope all is ok at home. Missing you all lots! Xxxxxx
BORING??? Those astonishing temples!! Honestly. How can he think that. The Temples at Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom are remarkable I gather and I’d love to go and admire the largest Hindu temple complex in the world. Built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation – first Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country’s prime attraction for visitors.
I am sure once he is there he will be massively impressed. I’ve been told to get him to look out for the charcoal rubbings of the celestial dancers (I’m sure they wont be interested!) but they are beautiful and cost about £2!
