This is definitely the future of shopping as far as my daughter is concerned….all very easy, inexpensive and accessible – if, of course, you have a parent’s credit card to hand – and she’s not the only one because the online fashion retailer, ASOS’s sales increased by 34% in December (or maybe that was just because of me)
She likes to do a bulk shop – putting a whole array of “must haves” in a list and recently, because she needed shirts et al for school and there was a sale, I ended up buying quite a few items for her. She is very good at the shopping psychology of women (well, me) when it comes to getting more for my money and spends an inordinate amount of time putting together a little section she has found Just. For. Me. I am always delighted and on this occasion I agreed to buy a few bits and pieces for me in addition to her sack load.
She monitors the delivery, instructs the drivers, follows their texts, reports on arrival and then tries everything on in a flurry in the kitchen and guess what? It all looks spectacular on her. Really, reaeeeeaalllly good. Which lulls me into a false sense of security.
I skip upstairs to try on my wares, only to discover that they all look awful. Either too big, too small, too young, or my arms don’t go through sleeves, or my legs don’t go through the legs, zips don’t zip up, too plunging, too high necked, TOO BLOODY WRONG IN SOME WAY SHAPE OR FORM AND NONE OF THEM MAKE ME LOOK LIKE HER….
It’s not fair.
Then even worse, as I’m not sure, I ask her opinion and her responses range from a gagging sound to a muted smirk “hmmm, that’s nice” she says not meaning it at all “no it isn’t, it looks awful” I say and in an effort to reassure me she says “well, at least you can wear it to work”…..like “work” is somewhere you go to look awful for the day and it really doesn’t matter….then she bursts out laughing, although to be fair to her she has tried for some time, not to do that.
I don’t look like she does in clothes anymore and of course, don’t get me wrong, I am over the moon that I have a gorgeous daughter who looks stunning at all times, I just don’t think she should stand anywhere near me anymore. Or suggest clothes that of course, are going to look like shit on me.
I am going to have to step up and start buying from Net-a-porter or some other much more grown up site.
Disappointing.
I must remember to read this before I am fooled into placing another large order. At some point I might even add photos of the difference so that you can see that I really am. Not. Joking.
In fact, here we are – I can’t even show you the side profile, I look six months pregnant. What was i thinking:-
