I’m not a big fan of Boris in general, but I have to say that the letter my son received yesterday was a genius bit of marketing.

He must be sending it to every 18 year old in London – here is what it says:-

Dear X,

Congratulations on turning 18. this is a huge milestone. You can now vote or stand for election as a Councillor, MP or even Mayor of London.

When I turned 18 Prince William was about to be born in st Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. British troops had just recaptured the Falkland Island. The Cold War was at its height and in many ways the world was a grimmer place. So I think one of my first actions was to go and exercise my legal right to have a drink in a pub – in moderation of course.

You are turning 18 at one of the most exciting times in London’s history. The eyes of the world are on us as we gear up to next summer’s Olympics. The Games alone are creating a huge number of opportunities for young Londoners like yourself, not to mention the thousands of new jobs and homes.

Ever since my 18th I have enjoyed my life as an adult citizen of the best big city on earth and I hope you will too. I look forward to the vital role you will play in making London even greater.

Best wishes,

Boris Johnson
Mayor of London

Well. What do you think of that then? Targeting the bright young things? I thought it was quite a chatty, interesting letter. My son was perturbed about how he got his address and that his letter to wish him Happy Birthday was six months late – no doubt something to do with having a list of new voters.

My brother said that he should write a letter back saying:-

Dear Boris,

How the f*ck did you get my address? Are you stalking me?

My son thought maybe he should write back:-

Dear Boris,

Thank you so much for your letter. Happy Birthday to you too on the 19th June. As I haven’t yet exercised my right to have a drink in a pub – would you like to join me for my first one? Maybe then we could chat about job opportunities during the Olympics? When are you free?

I look forward to hearing from you.

But I think it IS a good idea, don`t you? Taking the young folks seriously, telling them they count? And don`t be surprised at Boris knowing EVERYBODY`S address! We are now facing a census in Germany, counting sheep, so to say. But actually, they admitted, it was not even necessary to go round and ask people for where they live, whether they are married, what job they have, what religion, what pasta they eat – it is all known anyway! A hair-raising thought, but true, due to modern times.

Given that he didn’t turn it into a political manifesto, it’s quite a good idea. Bit like the 100th birthday letter you get from the Queen. Mind you, if they knew everything they’d have saved a few trees and sent it to his e-mail address. 😉
