Is it any wonder I am feeling a little bit frazzled at the moment? My mother has come to stay and I feel as if I’m one of those dolls you can dress up and change according to the event. Literally running from one life to the next. Yesterday as she sat on the sofa I popped in to say goodbye before rushing off to teach my Friday morning pilates class, two hours later I was back and changed for a meeting in town in a black dress and grey jacket and high heels, running down the road to catch the train. Three hours later I was back in jeans to take my son to football and two hours after that dressed up again to go out for a birthday dinner (yes, that’s right, moving swiftly on from my daughter’s birthday – it’s mine very very soon and I’m already celebrating).
Is it normal to be wearing quite so many hats? I’m not sure – I’m wondering whether something is going to have to give – already my admin is piled high to the ceiling. Still, I’m managing it all for now – looking after tiny babies is WAY more demanding than simply having to get yourself from A to B with a little bit of a personality change in the middle. The thing is, being in a energy fuelled meeting and talking about important businessy things is just so different from attempting to relax a class of eight women who are all lying on the floor listening to instructions. Got to be careful. For now I think it’s quite good to have such lovely extremes to enjoy. The worry will be when I slightly muddle the two things up and start telling senior management to breath in through the nose and out through the mouth….. ALTHOUGH I’m sure there is scope for that – in fact someone from the office has already asked me to take a pilates class so perhaps I can marry the two things together in the future.
In the meantime, if there is anyone in Putney who doesn’t have anything better to do on Tuesday evening between 7 and 8.30pm then come to my “Sporting Stretch Class” at the Putney clinic – it would be good to meet you and we can have a effort erasing drink afterwards!
Working Mum
November 10, 2012I think frazzled is the normal state for a working mum. Why don’t we get used to it?
Family Affairs
November 10, 2012Yes, perhaps should accept that it’s our default position Lx
Expat Mum
November 10, 2012My mum has been here for almost a month so I’m doing my normal stuff (running a charity, blogging, working towards a book deadline and having three kids) while going to museums, shops, restaurants etc with her. Feeling a bit stretched m’self!

Jo
November 14, 2012Well I think that you are doing brilliantly. I have told you before about my WWLD? tactic when faced with a tricky decision. I am sure that part of the problem is that those of us who like to think that we can multitask are also not very good at delegating.
I had a similar weekend; got up at 6.00 on Saturday to drive to Dorset to see my father (physically fantastic but increasingly severe Alzheimers, now like being with a toddler) and my stepmother (physically not so good but mentally on top form). Breakfast in the car (only way to get eighteen year old out of bed), took lunch with me, took dad out for the day then drove to Swansea to see number 2 son at University. Bought Chinese takeaway and multipack of Stella then back to Aberavon where there is a BestWestern that takes dogs. Woken at 6.00 by fire alarm and spent an hour and a half watching the sun rise over Port Talbot; nightie, fleece and flip-flops is a really good wardrobe choice for South Wales in November. Then big Tesco shop to replenish stocks for student who can’t quite work out where his student loan has gone followed by five-hour drive home to a pile of dirty washing and a totally empty fridge. Supper was the bottom third of a tub of Ben and Jerry’s with a large vodka poured over it.Eaten out of the tub. x
