Thanks to modern technology, I am feeling very in touch with my son who has recently arrived in Australia. In fact, so far, there has been little difference in our correspondence – he used to text me from his bedroom quite a lot anyway when he couldn’t be arsed to come downstairs.

Getting texts at 3am in the morning isn’t that different either – quite commonly he’d send me late texts either letting me know he was staying elsewhere or asking if a few mates (no more than 15) could come back if they were really quiet. Now I’m getting middle of the night texts saying things like “mum, I can’t unlock my phone – apparently I need a network code, can u call then and like just say that I bought a shitty phone from them but that they said I could unlock it and just get the code”

Then an hour at say 4am I might get: “did u get my text?”

SURELY he knows that there is an 11 hour time difference?

Anyway, they’re in Cairns now. All good. They had three lovely days in Melbourne staying with my friends which will lull them both into a false sense of security about how home from home Melbourne is but now they’ve moved on to a hostel so perhaps it will all feel a little more real. A little worryingly (given he’s been away less than a week and plans to stay away for another four months) he’s already said he’s running out of money!!!! Hopefully that was a joke.

So how was your weekend? (she says hopefully but with little expectation of many replies). Mine was busy (she mentions hopefully but with little expectation of anyone be even vaguely interested).

Friday night I went to my friend’s birthday dinner. A very intimate affair with just her parents and her children and a few others – I offered to cook which was slightly ambitious of me. My lovely friend – now in her early 40’s got everyone dancing to “Sweet Caroline” (their family anthem by 8.30pm) and by 9.00pm she was dancing on the table – well she had to – look at one of her presents:-

On Saturday night I went with my youngest son to see my brother and sister in law with their new baby for dinner. In between courses my son was shown how to make some splendid scars out of wax. Very realistic I think:-

This one perhaps is a little over the top:-

Then yesterday I spent most of the day watching him in a basketball tournament in Cobham. Makes a change from standing by the side of a football pitch I have to say. All warm and cosy inside although having said that it was a gorgeous day yesterday. He was good too, being twice the size of all the others in his age bracket.

Off to teach my pilates class now – just hoping the woman who came last week in a hat and tweed trousers has perhaps found something a little more comfortable to exercise in.
