This is a disaster. The whole world seems to have sold out of advent calenders….I am a failure of a mother who looked at a vast array of them in the supermarket when they first appeared on the shelves about six months ago and decided not to buy them so early….and now look what’s happened – I am into advent calender arrears. My children are hardly speaking to me. My daughter and I scoured the streets where we live yesterday. Nothing.
Today, in desperation I had to buy the “wrong” sort of calender. “Right”, in that it had chocolates in and not merely a picture of Father Christmas, but wrong because it wasn’t a Cadbury’s advent calender and if it’s not Cadbury’s then they don’t want it.
I have to say I’m with them on that. We’re a Cadbury’s family, not a Galaxy family and you have no idea how traumatised I am at the thought of Hershey’s buying Cadbury’s. Have you ever tried a Hershey bar? It’s revolting and while I’m on the subject what does it mean to make a hostile bid which is what Kraft are doing? I have this image of little processed cheese men firing arrows into the windows of the Cadbury’s factory and ramming the door. I don’t think we should sell it to an American company – apart from M & M’s it all tastes wrong. It will be a disaster. Come on everybody who likes chocolate – lets buy it ourselves.
Luckily, having had to cancel my day owing to having another sick child at home, I have been performing advent calender operations. Carefully cutting them open, picking out the wrong chocolates, melting a huge bar of Cadbury’s and filling in the gaps. Stitching it all back up and hoping I will have redeemed myself big time.
How sad.
Best quote of yesterday I heard was from a divorced dad who said his kids love having advent calenders at his house because “we get to eat 12 chocolates in one go!”.

December 2, 2009I’m sure you’ve redeemed yourself, what a lovely mum you are, refilling them! Years ago, to save myself from the same ‘disaster’ of not being able to find advent calendars, I bought a fabric one with pockets & put 4 of whatever is their favourite (at the moment it’s chocolate eclairs) in each. Not that this helps you at the moment, sorry! And I’m with you on a US company buying up cadburys, a very sad sign of our economy.

My kids are the same as yours won’t eat anything if its not Cadbury’s choccy! The amount of non-Cadbury’s Easter eggs I had to eat last year was a lot!

December 3, 2009I haven’t had an advent calendar since we were kids! What fun… Cadburys really is the best, I have to agree.. I have just eaten a whole box of green Smarties (stress relief!!) and just took the box out of the bin to find out who on earth makes them – it appears to be Nestle.. never realised that! I can’t imagine life without chocolate, and no matter how hard i always tried to persuade the teenagers to drink water and eat fruit (haha) the chocolate always won!
