I am really aching today. My girlfriend and I (who have done this walk together since it started, 5 years ago) did our bit to raise money for several breast cancer charities yesterday, in the sweltering heat. We felt a bit of a failure because we didn’t manage to do the whole thing. Luckily, we had the perfect excuse. I had an (embarrassing) ankle injury and therefore had to stop after 13 miles However, I also know from past experience that being on your own with three kids doesn’t work terribly well after you’ve just completed a marathon. I didn’t have anybody to look after my children and knew that on my return I would have to do all the usual stuff re food/homework/etc. I wouldn’t have had anybody to massage my brow and aching bones or to make me and the children supper and to tell me how fantastic I was every 10 minutes. In addition, losing toenails just before the summer when you’re trying to find a new boyfriend is not going to improve an already desperate situation.
Just before we set off at 8.30am, a young girl, representing the cancer charity talked about how much money is needed for research into breast cancer, particularly into a rare form of basal cell breast cancer. It is the most motivating thing you could hear….that our efforts are worth it. You set off with such a sense of purpose and meaning.
The money raised is split between the Caron Keating Foundation and Breakthough – both breast cancer charities. Gloria Hunniford, Caron’s mother is always there at the end of the walk to thank everybody for their support and to talk about Caron and the fund and how the money raised in her memory is being spent. So far I have received over £450.00 in sponsorship money, but my brother is cross. He thought he was sponsoring me to do the whole thing…I texted him that surely the money donated didn’t have to be directly related to the amount of pain and suffering I had to go through, but he texted back: “of course it’s about how much u suffer. I want my pound of flesh..”

Hope your brother pays up!
Well done, sorry about the ankle but hope it mends soon.
hello again, does that mean you’re back blogging again? I hope so x
Well done you, despite the injury. Tell your brother he has the wrong attitude!
I was at university with Caron and she was such a lovely person. Very beautiful but totally unaware of it, and mad as a hatter. Sometimes can’t believe she’s not here.
