So apparently it’s the 100 year anniversary of the clocks going back. The clocks go back at 2am this morning so we’ve gained an hour and have reverted back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). More like Greenwich Meany Time and I think it’s time to stop now as it’s causing the start of our “winter blues”. There will of course still be those people who don’t realise, but in our brave new world of the smartphone it is hardly something to worry about anymore as the time changes automatically so most millennials may well get through the day without even realising they’ve stayed in bed an hour longer.
My son included…who has just come downstairs in his football kit ready to play in his Sunday league game. “Have you changed your watch yet? Did you enjoy the extra hour in bed?” I asked him…”what extra hour? Oh I forgot…that must be why I’m feeling so awake”..
100 years ago I am sure everyone really did benefit from light mornings what with having to get up early and milk the cows or start walking to work. But the concept of “The Waste of Daylight” is no longer relevant and WE DON”T NEED IT ANYMORE, it’s just depressing. Not even the appeal of an “extra hour’s sleep” works at my age. It instead is just an extra hour of lying awake wondering why I’ve woken up so early and that I might as well just get up and wander around aimlessly because there’s nothing else to keep me in bed.
I don’t like the dark evenings either and really can’t imagine that they are of any use to any of us. I feel sorry for all those parents with young children struggling to keep them asleep in the morning – guess it’s good for the black-out blind industry. There are even potential risks to our health as we can’t exercise outside for as long and how can it be argued we are saving energy? It’s dangerous for children to have to walk to school in the dark and also the darkness can result in increased crime, road accidents and more drinking as people head to the pubs a bit earlier.
I just don’t understand why we don’t question it more and do something about it. It’s an immense hassle for all concerned. Would somebody please tell me what the point of it is?

Amanda in Atlanta
October 31, 2016We have another week before falling back an hour in the U.S. I hate it as well. Of course, here in Atlanta we are expecting Halloween temps of 86 degrees F/30C!!! So it’s so hot we are setting records and it feels like Summer, not Autumn.

November 1, 2016Scotland….Apparently. Thats why we, down in the southern part of the UK, have to change the clocks, because Scotland is dark – The whole time, in the winter, as far as I can make out….
Maybe independence isn’t such a bad idea – we can have different time zones between London and Edinburgh…how cool would that be?
