The documentary on Dave Allen tonight was the first programme I’ve watched for AGES on TV. I’d forgotten how much I loved him. What a good looking man he was….

He was my father’s favourite comedian and not only did they share a similar sense of humour and approach to life, they even shared a missing top of finger.

I met Dave once in Barker’s, a department store in Kensington High Street that no longer exists and he asked me to try a pair of gloves on he was buying for someone who had hands about my size – now I’ve seen his second wife perhaps they were for her as we are about the same age I suspect. I tried on a gorgeous pair of pink leather gloves which he was then happy to purchase but at the same time he asked the assistant to bring out the selection they had with a much shorter index finger that he could buy for himself.

What a shame he died so young. Especially disappointing when you want a prolific smoker and drinker to live until they are 99 at least. He was just like Keith Floyd. I bet they were friends.

I know – totally brilliant to see those hilarious sketches and stories again. He really was gorgeous, and yes so young. He died in his sleep 2 months before the birth of his youngest child; I cant imagine how his wife coped. By the way, apparently it was only ginger ale and ice his glass on stage – no whisky!
