Does anybody know if you can actually “catch” an ear infection like a cold – through droplets from the air? I know you can have viral or bacterial ear infections but thought that either they were a result of ear blockage due to a bad cold/cough or that you had to pick up the bacteria through water – sea or swimming pool.
The reason I’m asking is because one of Builder Bloke’s children is very prone to them. Has been very ill of late with suspected swine flu. This then moved on to a double ear infection, which he was suffering last weekend when my children were going to stay in the same house. I wasn’t happy about all the germs floating around. but my ex assured me that you can’t “catch” an ear infection and seemingly there was no way I was going to be able to stop my children from spending time with their new puppy.
HOWEVER. My youngest son has only just gone back to school today after 3 days of excruciatingly painful ears and a course of antibiotics. Just as he has recovered I have had to tuck my daughter back into bed with painkillers for exactly the same thing, plus temperature. It can’t be a coincindence surely?

January 13, 2011I’m not sure you can catch an ear infection per se, but you can certainly catch all the other bugs that led to that ear infection.

January 13, 2011Ears, noses, eyes and throats are all inter connected, colds, eye infections, sore throats and earache are all caused by bugs and viruses so probably not a coincidence.
