I went to the hairdresser yesterday – bloody hell does it ever cost a lot of money to make my hair look as if it came out of my trauma in a glossy and slightly auburn with sun-kissed streaks, rather than almost completely grey. Also, to the untrained eye (AKA “blokes”) it doesn’t look any different at all when I’ve had a cut and colour. So yesterday after my nearly 3 hours stint, I got her to dry it a bit curly – just for a change.

I rushed up to school pretending to be bionic woman with curly ringlets bouncing around me (but suspect I looked more like Miss Piggy). Lots of lovely girly comments about how FAB my hair looked and I was feeling great….until I bumped into the greatest critics of them all….my children:-

Daughter: “What has happened to your hair? It’s gone all fluffy! It looks like you have really reallly bad split ends”.

Teenage son” “OMG. What have you done to your hair? It looks really weird. Why is it all short at the back and long at the front and sticking out in strange directions?”

Then, today, my 7 year old gives me another little reality check on life (although I think I need to teach them the art of the little white lie):-

HIM: “Oh, I see you have a new pair of boots”.

ME: “No, they’re not boots, boots generally come up your legs and you wear them in winter”

HIM: “Oh, well, WHATEVER, high heels then”

ME: “No, they’re not high heels, high heels have to have high heels to be called high heels, these are completely flat”.

HIM: “WELL, FLIP FLOPS THEN”

ME: “No, flip flops generally have a bit between your toes and flip up at the back. These shoes I am wearing are generally called gorgeous black patent SANDALS. Do you like them?”

HIM: “Well, I quite like the sandals, but definitely not when they’ve got YOUR feet in them”.

He’s right of course. I’ve got hideous feet that ruin any sort of shoe. BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT.

My daughter and I got our hair cut the other day. Both of us had a drastic trim rather than a complete re-style. Hubby came into the kitchen and said what I thought was “Your hair looks nice”. In fact he had said “Her hair looks nice”, so when I said thank you, he looked at me with an “Oh no, now I’m in deep doo-doo” grimace. Honestly, if I had my head cut off at the jaw he probably wouldn’t notice!

At least your kids notice. Admittedly, my daughters do, my son never does and as for Q – forget it.

I bought some new glasses when in the UK and they are so very different to my previous pair – but did my son notice? HA.

Oh yes you can rely on children to pass offensive comments. I’m sure you looked GORGEOUS!

Thanks for the comment – they really aren’t very good at noticing things are they x
