Children coming back tomorrow – hooray (ish). I’ve had a really busy week buying boring stuff for the new house and building furniture and yet they will notice very little difference. In fact they are going to be deeply disappointed. Particularly my teenage son who now can’t even get into his room because his mother failed to measure and buy the correct pieces of furniture.
We should be able to move in next week – my timing is immaculate. Just about the moment that house prices begin to slide. It’s a bit scary reading the facts – and frankly what I think is going to happen is this:-
sub-prime mortgage disaster in the US = financial market disaster in the UK = consumer confidence slump and banks being far more selective about who they lend money to = interest rate increases result in people not being able to afford to pay their mortgage having already borrowed hugely against what they thought was a dead cert = less money to spend on the high street on white goods and general commodoties = secondary house price slump. There are already huge warnings regarding commercial property and therefore private property will inevitably follow shortly behind.
Oh well, I knew that when I bought the place and decided that my children’s security was more important. My only major concern is that when I move in I’ll feel strange. Although the last year of renting and being homeless has been odd and vaguely stressful, it sort of coincides with a change in my life direction. Being homeless matched my state of mind. I suspect that once everything calms down and I once again become a “happy suburban house owner” I will want to throw everything up in the air again. Oh well, maybe I’ll get one or two of those lovely estate agents round to value the house…you never know, I might sell it.
