Spent yesterday at the London Rugby 7’s at the home of rugby in Twickenham. Spent today recovering. It was an interesting day, mostly not about rugby. Everyone was dressed up – especially the men and nobody appeared to be watching the games particularly avidly. It’s a similar atmosphere to the Hong Kong rugby 7’s, but there it’s a total sell-out and everyone watches all the games. Has a far more international feel about it than the London 7’s. Hopefully year on year this will pick up – I’m not sure how they go about doing this – there needs to be more bonafide rugby fans in attendance and less alcohol. Honestly, by the end of the day, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many pissed people in one space. Presumably that was the reason for closing the bars at 5pm – but that caused a mass exodus to the local pubs and I presume (as we were part of the mass exodus) that there weren’t very many people watching the last England game of the first day. Also no idea why there was no security when we came in?
Today would have probably been a better day to go. Better rugby and more exciting games. Scotland have just beaten England in the finals. It’s a really great event to go to though – everyone in high spirits and it’s a wonderful snapshot of all the international teams. Yesterday we watched Kenya triumph over Wales with their amazing speed and of course in the 7’s, given there are only 7 players it’s a totally different game and needs a lot of speed.
So we joined in the party spirit:-
I found my tribe en route to the pub!:-
Some great costumes out in force:-
Then we slowly watched the crowd dissolve after over-drinking, this shot sums up how a lot of people were feeling I imagine:-
