Mat Vs Reformer Pilates: Why I think Reformer Pilates Takes the Lead

I’ve been teaching Pilates now for over twenty years and fully appreciate how long the method has been celebrated for its ability to strengthen, stretch, and stabilise the body. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned fitness enthusiast, Pilates offers something for everyone. But when it comes to choosing between mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates, the decision can feel daunting. While both forms share the same foundational principles, the Reformer often takes the lead due to its versatility, effectiveness, and dynamic nature.

Now that I’m also a qualified Reformer teacher, I thought I’d share the key differences and highlight why I believe Reformer Pilates has the edge.

Mat Pilates: The Foundation of Control

Mat Pilates is a classic approach that requires minimal equipment – just a mat and, sometimes, small props like resistance bands or a Magic Circle (Pilates ring). Its focus lies in using body weight and gravity to build core strength, improve posture, and enhance flexibility. The simplicity of mat Pilates makes it accessible and cost-effective. It’s an excellent starting point for those new to Pilates or those who prefer a low-tech, portable workout that you can basically do anywhere.

Benefits of Mat Pilates:

  • Accessibility: All you need is a mat, making it easy to practice anywhere.
  • Core Focus: Many mat exercises target the deep core muscles.
  • Foundation Building: It’s a great way to learn fundamental Pilates principles, like breathing and alignment.

However, mat Pilates can have its limitations, especially for those who struggle with mobility or require additional support. Or, on the other hand if you’re super fit or like something with a bit more action, then the small precise movements can be boring.  In my experience, whilst not wanting to sound stereotypical – many men I have taught simply don’t get the tiny movements for months – something to do with body awareness and the belief that if there’s no tangible pain, then there clearly is going to be no gain.  Some may also find it challenging to achieve the variety and progression needed to keep workouts engaging and interesting over time.

Reformer Pilates: A Game Changer

The Pilates Reformer is a specialised piece of equipment consisting of a sliding carriage, adjustable springs, straps, and bars. It might look intimidating at first, but this machine is a game changer, offering an unparalleled range of exercises to challenge and support the body.

Why Reformer Pilates Stands Out:

  1. Enhanced Resistance and Support: The adjustable springs on the Reformer provide resistance that can be tailored to your fitness level. This feature allows for both progression and regression of exercises, making it suitable for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. The added support can also help those with injuries or limited mobility perform exercises safely.
  2. Full-Body Workout: While mat Pilates emphasises core work, the Reformer engages the entire body. From strengthening the arms and legs to improving spinal alignment, the Reformer provides a holistic workout that promotes balanced muscle development.
  3. Greater Variety: The versatility of the Reformer keeps workouts fresh and exciting. With countless exercises and modifications available, it’s easier to stay motivated and avoid plateaus.  You can also do a lot of cardiovascular exercises on it.
  4. Improved Precision and Alignment: The machine’s design encourages proper alignment and form. For example, the foot bar and shoulder rests help position the body correctly, reducing the risk of injury and maximising the effectiveness of each movement.
  5. Faster Results: In my opinion it’s like mat Pilates on steroids!  The combination of resistance, support, and variety means you’ll likely see results faster with Reformer Pilates. Many practitioners report improvements in strength, flexibility, and posture within just a few sessions.

Choosing What’s Right for You

Both mat and Reformer Pilates have their place in a well-rounded fitness routine. If you’re just starting or looking for a portable, budget-friendly option, mat Pilates is a fantastic choice. But if you’re ready to invest in a more dynamic, challenging, and supportive practice, Reformer Pilates is hard to beat.

Many studios offer hybrid classes that incorporate both mat and Reformer exercises, giving you the best of both worlds. There are also many group Reformer classes that you could try – that definitely keeps the costs down.  I now offer one-to-one Reformer classes because that is the way to achieve the results you specifically want.  I also tend to focus more on injuries and rehabilitation – something which simply cannot be dealt with effectively in a larger class environment.

Final Thoughts

Pilates, in any form, is a powerful tool for enhancing physical and mental well-being. However, the Reformer’s adaptability, effectiveness, and ability to deliver a full-body workout make it the standout option for those looking to elevate their practice.
