Britain said yesterday that it was considering using the Royal Navy and requisitioning merchant ships to ferry home citizens stranded abroad by the closure of much of European airspace because of volcanic ash.
Pick me, pick me!! My children and I would be very happy to be escorted home by the Royal Navy from Dubai.
I gather that the response to the crisis is threatening to become a domestic political issue ahead of a general election on May 6 and with the ruling Labour Party trailing in opinion polls and they need to get us all home.
“We need to look at every single logistical option for getting our people back home,” Mandelson said after an emergency meeting of ministers and officials chaired by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
I had better keep quiet about what I think might happen in the election then because from my unusual perspective, stranded in Dubai, watching the news closely, it looks as if the Liberal Democrats are getting a lot of press coverage. The debate between the three party leaders was a genius stroke for the Lib Dems – they were always going to look good up on stage against the other two parties – big mistake by Labour and the Conservatives. People are finally beginning to recognise Nick Clegg – up until now he’s been pretty anonymous and I reckon he’s got a more appealing, down to earth approach, an honest looking face (always helps – although maybe shouldn’t post Blair) and a more man of the people sounding voice.
Everyone is no doubt still confused about who to vote for because the parties and political boundaries are so blurred, therefore Nick Clegg’s approach about a third way forward is going to be very appealing. Especially, I suspect for the younger generation.
So, whilst most people feel let down by Labour and are not sure about Cameron my prediction that there are many Liberal sympathisers out there might just come true. Much better than a hung parliament anyway.
HOWEVER, let it be said that my vote could go anyway until I’m back in the UK. So if somebody from any party wants to entice me with a homeward bound ride in a Chinook helicopter or a submarine then I’d be very happy to consider voting for them.

April 19, 2010you took the words outta my mouth…what about land, what about sea, l’m saying…get those army and navy lad s out there practising and team building and into some kinda action….bring them all home…you aint gonna be flying anytime soon lets face it…we have no idea what these particles could do to an engine…
this is far more reaching than just holiday passengers needing to get home, its a whole new infrastructure potentially…and everyone is keeping quite because of the economic and social effects..
hope you are keeping busy…whats the embassy doing..have they gathered you and spoken to you there yet…

April 19, 2010Fear not, Lord Adonis (Transport Minister) suggested that the Government would commandeer the British Merchant Fleet to bring you all home.
Hang on though, the Transport Minister seems to have forgotten that we no longer have a merchant fleet, most vessels are now registered offshore! This is the same man that thought that the A1 between Newcastle and Edinburgh was in fact in Greater Manchester……..
