Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of encouraging anyone out there with a blog to make money from it if you can….

It’s not easy and a couple of years ago there were lots of discussions afoot about sponsored posts and advertising and endorsements and I did actually think briefly for a minute about whether it was going to be possible to write a persuasive post about travel insurance with a link directly back to a travel insurer….but it hasn’t really worked for me. I have decided that unless the brand sits well with what I write about it just doesn’t work.

So, I have to therefore question, although they are no doubt now very rich whether taking on all manner of advertising actually works.

Particularly if you are writing a political blog.

Take for example, Mr Guido Fawkes, the big guiding light of clever informative news about the world of politics “plots, rumours and conspiracies”. I’d be very interested to know whether he has noticed a drop in followers ever since he’s covered his blog with adverts – in amongst all the words are dozens of ads for brands like 7 Up, Laura Ashley and insurance.

Personally I find it very off putting – what do you think?

He’s even in The Sun now!

Is this the way forward for blogs?
