When I was young and living in Hong Kong we always had a fear of the dreaded “Red Tide” algae that used to appear from nowhere. Quite often I recall emerging from the sea looking like a sea monster covered in little bits of purple stuff that quickly turned a lighter shade of green. Never though did I actually see the reason behind the name – a sea of blood coloured crimson tide made up of thousands of algae blooms. Apparently harmless but unnerving nevertheless – looks like someone has been eaten alive.
This time in Hong Kong a photo was taken from Sai Kung where you can see it in all it’s glory – apparently owing to a rapid accumulation of algae developing in the water column resulting in a coloration of the surface water.
