Shame you can’t harness the nervous energy emanating from around the country today. Not much else on the collective British mind I suspect…my daughter keeps wandering around asking “who do you want to win”? It’s hilarious, because it keeps incensing her father. Luckily for my father, he won’t really mind who wins because he was brought up in South Africa, so conveniently, at times like these, his allegiance can go either way.
I have just waved my children off for the week. They’ve gone to North Norfolk with their father and his family. All very odd. I am now left alone in my ex husbands house, which is very strange and actually very kind of him to let me stay. I was meant to be flying to Africa this morning with my family to do a grave sweeping tour of my fathers’ childhood. However, he is undergoing tests for cancer at the moment and therefore we decided to postpone the trip. So, now I find myself with an unexpectedly empty week. It means I can focus on building yet more Ikean furniture and getting the house a bit more ready for moving in to. But I’m feeling a little bereft…
Still, what I need to do is get down to the pub and join the merry throngs…and start singing Kenny Rogers “The Gambler” which has become the unofficial anthem. I have always thought the chorus was a good “life” message:-
You’ve got to know
When to hold ’em
Know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away,
Know when to run.
You never count your money
When you’re sittin’ at the
table.
There’ll be time enought for
countin’
When the dealin’s done.
This could apply just as appropriately to a game of rugby, a divorce, relationships in general, children or a game of poker.
