SAVE OUR BEES

Today the environment minister, Owen Paterson, will be casting his vote in Europe on the future of our bees.

Please, can you help spread the word right now, and make sure that everyone is talking about the bees before he goes to vote? Owen will find it harder to vote against a ban if he knows that public opinion is completely against him.

Let’s share the petition on facebook, let’s email our friends and let’s tweet about the bees. With over 300,000 signatures so far, we can make sure the bees have an army of us looking out for them.

It’s a long shot, Owen seems determined to do the bidding of the pesticide companies. But if we can make sure that Owen Paterson and his department are swarmed by hundreds of thousands of people demanding he votes to protect the bees, it might just be enough to change his mind.

On Friday, 38 Degrees members took part in a ‘March of the Beekeepers’ at Parliament Square. It followed on from a successful demonstration in Bulgaria which managed to persuade their Prime Minister to change his mind and vote to stop the pesticides.

The ‘March of the Beekeepers’ was hosted by 38 Degrees along with Avaaz, Buglife, Environmental Justice Foundation, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, Pesticide Action Network UK, RSPB, and the Soil Association.

Owen’s seen the strength of support on the streets outside Parliament, but let’s make sure that support is still buzzing in his ears today.

Our bees are in danger, three species of bees are already extinct and others are in rapid decline.

Strong evidence points to particular pesticides being to blame for killing them. But the environment minister recently refused to support a European vote to stop the pesticides being used.

Now we’ve got just a few weeks to change the minister’s mind before he votes again. Other countries have already banned certain pesticides that have a growing level of scientific evidence that they are killing off our bees. WE NEED BEES. They pollinate a massive amount of the food we eat….and they’re cute and furry.

Let’s show him that it’s time our government stood up to the powerful pesticide industry and took action to protect our bees.

I’ve just added my name to the petition to Owen Paterson, Environment Secretary to request that the UK government support the ban on Nerve agent pesticides (neonicotinoids) which are being blamed around the world for the sharp decline in bee numbers.

You can add your name here and we can make a difference.
