School reunion last night.
Messy.
There were school friends I hadn’t seen for 35 years. Good grief.
Lots of teachers too. But it was a sign of the times that the name of the booking on the door was unfamiliar – I thought I’d come to the wrong place – only to discover that he is the current headmaster and I think he might have been younger than me….
So. Bearing in mind that my school was in Hong Kong, it was a very good turn out. I discovered two days before that even my younger brother was going – and we were 10 years apart in school years (not in real years obviously – he wasn’t very bright and I was) so there was a wide range of mostly very old people.
I chatted with my old form teacher for ages – a lovely gentle man who all those years ago couldn’t really cope with all our girly issues. I used to go home every night to see him read the evening news! Bizarre.
You know you’re getting old when one of your former teachers tells you you need a face lift…..my old biology teacher, now turned dermabrasion (is it just me, or is that one of the worst descriptive words ever to want to do to my face?) expert. As a result, I blamed him for the fact that I got a C in Biology (I may have even got a U I can’t quite remember conveniently) because he was too busy snogging the other biology teacher in the cupboard….
My first boyfriend was there. The one I went out with for FOUR years from 14 – 18. Good grief what an inordinately long time to be with one person. So strange to see him again. His sister was there too. She kept reminding me of hideous things. “Do you remember that time we both nearly drowned when we jumped off the boat during that late night party when we were really pissed and we were naked and couldn’t get back up the steps?”……
“Um, no, I don’t – NAKED? Don’t be ridiculous. Of course I wouldn’t have done that” Would I? Sure she must have been thinking of somebody else.
I had a long conversation with my ex boyfriend about “but WHY didn’t you tuck your arm in that time my mum found you hiding under my bed?? WHY was your arm sticking out?? How could you just let it stick out like that to get caught? And he had to do a whole explain why his arm was sticking out and it was hilarious because he remembers exactly what my mother said to him as he had to do the walk of shame from my room to the front door and really it was one of those memories I will never forget….she made him stay under the bed for ages until my father had gone to bed so that he didn’t find out and I believe, to this day that he thinks he was lucky to have come out alive.
