So what will Boris do next now that he’s resigned as an MP? All fascinating stuff if it wasn’t such a disaster for the UK’s economy and general standing in the world.
I haven’t written about Boris and/or Brexit for a while now, it just became too depressing and puzzling, but somehow it feels fitting to mark what is (finally?) the end of the parliamentary line for Boris, as he and Carrie and his multitude of children sidle off to somewhere quiet so that he can spend the rest of his life making obscene amounts of money doing talks around America and we don’t all make too much of a fuss about the unfairness of it all.
Can Boris walk away?
But what are the chances of that? Can Boris just walk away at this stage? Even if he could find it in himself to do the dignified thing and accept he f*cked up, he needs to be the centre of attention, so how is that going to work? Clearly the Partygate report is going to say that he f*cked up and knowingly misled everyone, but he’s always going to blame everyone else. I bet his ex wives and the mothers of all his children are not surprised with this outcome – that’s probably the reason why they didn’t feel the need to speak up over the years – they knew he was going to mess it up all by himself.
So he’s having a Rumplestiltskin-esque tantrum and using rhetoric not dissimilar to Donald Trump when he’s been put in a tight spot and has to throw his toys out of his pram just to feel a bit better. “A witch-hunt” is exactly what Trump said about his various tiny current misdemeanours – the ones that he’s possibly going to end up in prison because of. I’m not sure Trump has used the term “Kangaroo court” yet, but that’s probably because it’s not something they say in the US – indeed it’s not something we would usually say either. Trump uses the word “hoax” a lot – I’m sure it won’t be long before Boris uses that word too to dismiss every institution going. Is anyone going to take him seriously anymore? He’s like a child who hasn’t got his way. A man boy. A combination of Kendal and Roman Roy, maybe even with a little bit of Connor thrown in.
Is this not the epitome of what narcissistic behaviour really is?
A narcissist is someone who thinks that the world should revolve around them and when it doesn’t go their way, it’s always going to be someone else’s fault. So Rishi – I would recommend that you don’t get into a war of words with him about the Honours list debacle – just don’t engage. Otherwise it will fuel the fire even further. Most of us don’t care about the honours list anyway (obviously Nadine and someone else does because they’ve just resigned over not getting their peerages – although that may have been a tactical move planned in advance with Boris, lets see). I’m all for giving honours to those unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes, but anyone who willingly chooses to make Jacob Rees-Mogg even more pompous than he already by giving him a “Sir” to put in front of his name has seriously lost the plot.
Is anyone surprised?
Boris has always been an untrustworthy liar – everyone knew it, but those people who voted for him presumably didn’t really mind. His inability to be loyal to anyone but himself has been shown time and time again. However, he does have a relatively innate ability to read the room and so it’s clear he’s made the decision to stomp off in a huff whilst blaming Harriet Harman, Sue Gray, his old friend Rishi and any establishment that appears to be laying down unreasonable rules, because he’s not going to win the by-election.
So what is his next move?
He is most definitely having a tantrum, but I’m quite sure that this is a more considered decision than he wants it to look like. He’s had plenty of time to prepare for the inevitable outcome of this review and I don’t think he particularly cares that he’s about to singlehandedly destroy what remains of the Conservative party, because this is just part of how he’s going about plotting his next move (whilst blaming everyone else for the demise of the Conservative party). He needs to get himself out of a tight spot as quickly as possible and then make his next move. He clearly still has options… so what will it be? The Telegraph? The speech circuit? More books? More children? Move in with Trump?
We all wait with baited breath and in the meantime, thanks for nothing Boris.
