Welcome to the beginning of term and every parents nightmare.
Sticky back plastic.
If teachers realised what a total stress this was for us parents I don’t think they’d put us through it. They’d get someone to do it at school I HATE STICKY BACK PLASTIC and all the new books that need covering.
Mainly because I am shit at it. I don’t know why I’m so bad, I’ve had years of practice in which to perfect the art.
All the other children’s books seem to be immaculate. I try really hard and get bumps. Loads of them. So many that my daughter was always reduced to tears. Literally every time. Until eventually she discovered that her father was much better at it than I was and so now I have been fired.
Interestingly she used to spend hours decorating the books prior to me totally messing them up. Loads of little pictures and drawings and sparkles. Whereas both my boys couldn’t be more disinterested in the decoration of their books – apart from being marginally traumatised about what I manage to do to them, but that’s it.
Anyway, my son hasn’t seen my efforts this evening to cover his Spanish book. I spent half an hour trying to get it right and look – after all these years and still a disaster:-

September 11, 2013When I was at convent school, me and a friend had a special job, which was to cover text books with SBP for one of the nuns. I am expert at it. I wish I had known – I could have talked you through it. It’s all about rolling the book onto the plastic.

September 11, 2013You should do a YouTube video. You’d get loads of hits. Or start charging. I’d pay you to do it for me x

September 14, 2013I had absolutely no idea schools anywhere still asked kids (parents!) to do this. When I was at junior school I remember having to cover mine with offcuts of wallpaper (hideous 70s wallpaper at that!) but it isn’t something my children have ever had to do. You have my every sympathy.
Last time I saw that sticky backed plastic stuff was when I was a librarian and I used to use it to make my shelf signs posher – it was before the days of laminators which would have saved me so much time and stress!
