My teenage son has just come back from a week in Sri Lanka with a friend’s family and here is what he thought of it. He very sweetly brought me back a little tiny elephant – he knows how much I love them:-
We had such an amazing time in Sri Lanka – it was a great experience and we did some really great things. It wasn’t even too difficult a flight, because we stopped off in Dubai for 24 hours, breaking up the journey. We flew into Columbo and drove immediately out to the hills to stay in the Aliya Resort and Spa which was a four hour drive, but worth it when we got there. Nestled in the rural countryside of Sigiriya it was a beautiful location and incredibly relaxing. From there you can go on safari in the national park and visit archaeological ruins.
My favourite bit was visiting the elephants. We also saw a mongoose, but no leopards unfortunately:-
We hired a really brilliant driver to take us to all the sites and navigate the scary roads who looked after us incredibly well and so after that we drove to Kandy to watch my friend’s brother play cricket in one of the most spectacular cricket grounds in the world. On the way we visited the Temple of the Tooth and a herb farm which was interesting.
We stayed in another wonderful hotel and found some great rooftop bars and ate some delicious food. Sorry no photos of the temples or the food – just the beer!
We also went to a turtle sanctuary and learnt all about the sustainability of protecting these animals which was fascinating as well as swam in the sea with the larger turtles. We even saw some of them hatching.
