THE GREAT GATSBY

I watched this film the other day with my children. My daughter and I absolutely loved it – she did the book for GCSE so kept telling me all about the significance of the green light and so on. My son thought it was the most tediously long film ever (well he is only 12) and the only saving grace for him is that he LOVES Spiderman so watching Tobey Maguire made it bearable for him. Leonardo was perfect in the role of Gatsby and it’s such a splendidly visual film – although we didn’t see the 3D version. Such gorgeous costumes, make-up, nail varnish, hair…

Funnily enough the ending is very similar too – whilst I know that’s giving lots away – it is a book most people know the story to, I’m sure so hopefully it’s not that bad to say that.

My daughter suggested I have a “Great Gatsby” themed party for my next birthday but I had to point out that it would only really work if I had the funds to hire a 25 bedroom house with a large swimming pool – doesn’t really work in teeny weeny suburbia.

So, old sport….go and see it. Quite a girly film I suspect, but very well acted and now I’m going to watch the original and compare. So, do you think Daisy was purely materialistic and shallow? Or was she trying to save her marriage et al at the end? What a sad story all round….and was Gatsby “the single most hopeful person” ever?
