We’re all getting very excited about our family wedding this weekend. My daughter can’t stop talking about her role as a bridesmaid and what she’s wearing and how she’s going to do her hair and so on…
I went shopping this morning for all the necessary bits to make my dress look appropriate for “sister of the groom”. I’m doing a reading in the church too. I’ve got to look the part. First stop:- Hats. I couldn’t find one I liked and anyway, I suspect there are not going to be many people wearing hats.
Next stop:- “Fascinators”. I haven’t been to a wedding since that strange word came into existence. I don’t even know how to wear them, let alone how to drop them into conversations. I tried on a few and after a little while I began to formulate a theory. I think that someone is having a laugh. At what point in the timeline of life did somebody manage to con us into thinking that birds nests look good in our hair? I looked like something in between a Dr Seuss character and a patient sitting in the waiting room at the Hospital of Tropical Diseases. Odd. Having bits of feather and wire sticking out of your head. I think.
So I compromised and bought a teeny weeny hairband with a couple of teeny weeny feathers on that my daughter said made me look like a child wearing something backwards. Great.
My 9 year old is slowly getting to grips with the whole event. “Mum, talk me through the next few days and what’s happening and what I’m meant to be doing again…I don’t really get it – do you realise that I haven’t been to a wedding in my ENTIRE life? This will be my first experience AND I’VE GOT A BIG JOB TO DO AND I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO IT. Remind me who I’m supposed to be looking after again? My uncle? OK good. So how do I look after him? Isn’t he old enough to look after himself? OK. So I’m supposed to ush his friends over to where they’re supposed to sit in the church. How will I know? Do I have to give them books to read? OK. I can do that”.
Two minutes later, he wandered back. “How much am I getting paid for this job?”
Fat, frumpy and fifty...

August 25, 2009Awwww. When it was small childs communion I couldn't be bothered with a veil so I got her a deadly fascinator from Monsoon (a grown up one as well) and she looked the coolest kid there. I could see the other Mum's eyeing it up.

August 26, 2009Fascinators? I'd never heard of those before. I shall blame the fact that I live in Africa. I fear, though, that this is not true… It's actually because I don't read fashion magazines, but let's keep that to ourselves. What fun! A wedding! x
