Good grief. What a day. Increased security was very high profile everywhere – which didn’t deter us from heading straight off to Grand Central Station to find Magnolia Bakery – best cupcakes in town:-
Then, struggling to make our way back to Fifth Avenue we watched a constant stream of (mostly) men, women and children take part in the Labour Day Parade, postponed specifically to tie in with 9/11 10th anniversary memorial parade. It was an incredible atmosphere – everyone revving their engines and cheering. Bands playing and people singing and shouting their way down the street, supported on either side of the road by those just watching.
It started with the steel workers and the iron workers, then the electrical workers and the plumbers and then later in the day it moved on to the police and the firemen and I’ll show some more photos later, but in the meantime, here was some from the start of the day:-
