Well that’s cheered even me up for a minute – the engagement of Kate and William. Will perk us all up a bit next year in these austere times – teenage son already looking forward to his day off school and teenage daughter just said “DAMN” when I told her the news yesterday. Sadly, because she knows that a friend in my class at school in Hong Kong became a real life princess, she had high expectations. Don’t they make a lovely couple? I thought she looked gorgeous and the ring looks infinitely better on her hand than it did on Diana’s. How lovely for William to say it was his way of keeping his mother close.

What a strange week I’m having. All feels very surreal. We all have so much to do. Arranging a funeral is no easy task when you don’t know where to begin and you feel as if lead weights are attached to every limb of your body. I met the vicar to discuss my father’s memorial and he helped formulate a plan with me. First thing he asked was “how much God do you want in it?” which I thought was very modern of him.

Everybody has been lovely. My children feel as if they are stuck to me and Builder Bloke is cooking for us every night and has turned into one big hug machine. Which is just what I need.

Friends keep popping round or sending cards and pressies. One friend appeared with a hamper of choclatey things yesterday to boost my seratonin levels and sat and talked to me whilst we ate most of it. She texted me later “so sorry just realised I seem to have eaten all the grief gifts I bought you. Replacements on way”. Another old old friend came later with homemade lemon drizzle cake and offered to take over from me whilst I deliver the eulogy if I fall apart which I thought was lovely.

My teenage son said “does everybody want you to get really fat now?” as I ate my third slice of cake. I will need to be a bit careful. I wasn’t expecting, after a week of mourning, to be the only one to have put on weight. I didn’t go out, did no exercise and we did a lot of comfort eating and drinking. So I noticed in the class I took this morning that my belly oozed out between layers of my exercise clothes, which is not the best look for the teacher.

Got to hate that oozing belly thing. It’s only temporary and temporarily very important. Virtual hug x

So very sorry to hear about your dad. I think cake and hugs are pretty well mandatory at times like these xxx
