Forgive me. I’m feeling morbid. Nothing like the death of a parent to focus the mind. Make you question life and your own sense of mortality…..

SO much to do. People to contact. Stuff to think about. Lawyers to meet. Aren’t funerals expensive? The feeling is a little like when you have a new baby and only want the best – buying unnecessarily expensive items just because you feel you should. Do we really need several limousines to take us to the crematorium at VAST expense? I considered asking them whether we could all lie down on that flat bit next to his coffin so that we don’t have to pay for two, but thought they might think that was weird. Anyway. They’re a bit gloomy those long black shiny vehicles.

My brother got a condolence message yesterday saying “really sorry to hear about your dead”. Really, you’d think they’d do a spell check on that one….

Finally I leave you with a thought, because it has been of great comfort to me that I said everything I needed to say to my father before he died:-

“If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting?

Hang in there. This is normal. Don’t worry too much. Funerals, weddings – they always cost way too much and it’s hard to control the cost, even if you try. Concentrate on making that day as much about you and your feelings, and the feelings of your loved ones, as possible. You need time and space for your grief. Imagine what you would do if you were alone and did not have throngs of people to take care of.

It’s a terrible time. I’ve lost both of mine, and nothing really makes it any easier.

Just know that no matter what you do (cars, dresses etc) none of it matters, you’re there to say goodbye & support mum. That’s all that counts. It’s actually one of the few times, apart from weddings, that the entire family manages to get together. I got some comfort from that.

My prayers are with your family.

You’re right. I suspect all the deliberating merely serves as a necessary distraction L x
