Happy Thanksgiving weekend…I know Thanksgiving was earlier in the week, but lots of my American friends were celebrating this weekend, busily making strange flavour pies. Odd how little information we get about this huge American celebration, considering how Americanised we are. I’m actually surprised that we haven’t taken it up as our own yet, like Halloween and Coca Cola and Nike.

Interesting weekend..my daughters chocolate party was a success, I think. Girls of that age seem to do a lot of hugging and then little groups go off to have some hugely important discussion in the loo and then they come out and do yet more hugging.

I’ve already mentioned the extraordinary Amy Winehouse concert, which was decidedly odd and on Sunday I took my daughter and her friend to the Abercrombie and Fitch shop in central London. What an experience to behold. The door was opened for us by Thing One and Thing Two (a set of gorgeous identical twins wearing matching A & F from head to foot). Then, much to my daughter’s horror, I had my photograph taken with a ridiculously young, almost naked man – his six pack was so well defined he looked like he had on a prosthetic superman suit. I then attempted to find my way around without bumping into people. It is so dark in there you need a torch, which obviously wouldn’t have been a very cool look. I had no idea what colour items there were – they all looked the same. However, the staff members are gorgeous and everybody wants a piece of the whole “lifestyle” thing they seem to suggest you can buy. I wanted to look like the members of staff in the shop – preferably one of the female ones, but I wouldn’t have minded being one of the gorgeous boys either.

I couldn’t resist buying a ridiculously young smock type top that only looks good on the sales assistants in there and 12 year olds. We queued for hours to pay and when we left, the queue to get in went round the block. Apparently it has been like that from the day it opened.

Not only would it have been significantly cheaper to get on a plane to NY to shop in A & F but it would have been quicker.

If you are over 40 I would advise you to do the following:

a) think about not going, you will only feel very old
b) if you have to go, take a torch
c) take ear plugs
d) do not go under any circumstances if your bust size is anything larger than a 34b.

I arrived home exhausted and cooked a meal for 8 of us – wearing new (not colour I was expecting it to be) smock top. Everybody agreed that I looked like a pregnant Jane Austen in wool. So then I was grumpy.

Teenage son now looks ridiculous. Huge fat nose with tiny eyes, but he went to school anyway. I had to pick my daughter up at lunchtime today with a sore throat (which she’s had all weekend, but it didn’t stop her from doing any of her fun activities obviously).

Ex has responded to my suggestion about next years holidays with an email that simply says “Thank you for your usual compassionate understanding attitude”. That leaves a lot of room for discussion then.
