All good in my house at the moment – I have my firstborn back from university for the next five months (although he has already disappeared off for sojourn number one – back tomorrow). It’s great to have him back. So interesting how it changes the family dynamics when he’s around….anyway, I’m hoping he is going to get a job, he seems to have an awful lot of plans to pay for.

I made the fatal mistake of allowing him to do the supermarket shop this week because I was at work and thought that was what working mothers do. Never again. Not only did he spend twice as much as I asked him to (“sorry mum I didn’t know everything was going to cost so much, but it was just so much fun and I couldn’t stop”) but every cupboard is now full of Nutella, chocolate biscuits and crisps. Admittedly he did also buy lots of fruit and vegetables for smoothies (in our house they should be called “Messies” owing to the amount of stuff left everywhere and washing up to do for a glass of something nobody even likes very much) and the puzzling thing is that whilst the fridge is rammed full there does not appear to be anything actually to eat in the fridge – just loads and loads and loads of snacks and now he’s gone away again for a party so I am left to try and hoover up the Nutella and biscuits in his absence before my other two children get to them. It’s a difficult job, but somebody’s got to do it.

My daughter is still in stressy exam mode but nearly finished thank god. She’s doing biology and came back the other day after her class saying that she’d had to sit at the front because she had been unable to do the dissection required because it made her feel completely sick and she kept gagging. In the past she has had to dissect rats and eyeballs and other such revolting things and generally she had had no problem at all with any of that so I had visions of all sorts of horrific things to cut up – what on earth could it be that would render her unable to perform the task to hand?

I braced myself. Turns out it was…..

A banana.

I kid you not. Visions of poor little spread open banana fill my head.

She is unable to get close to a banana without gagging. I think it might have had something to do with my over-enthusiasm as a new mother to the ease with which mashed banana could be made and fed to small children without any teeth. I think perhaps she OD’d on the stuff.

My youngest son is still in the middle of his exams – hence the “all good” pre exam result comment – worryingly I have found lots of bits of paper that say things like “Biology Revision” at the top and then an entirely blank page. He says he can’t write things down, it doesn’t help. So far he has come home every day saying that the exams have either been “shit” or “really good”. So we’ll see.

Had a lovely casual evening out at a friend’s house for dinner last night – when I told her I wasn’t going to be able to take a photo of her meal for my “Lifestyle” blog because it wasn’t presented well enough, she took a sharp intake of breath – was horrified – so added to the image enough to make it attractive – so it’s made it in…
