We had the most lovely evening on Saturday. Builder Bloke and I took all our children out for a meal where we all ended up all dancing about together. I wasn’t sure I wanted to do anything because it all seemed too soon after my father’s death. But my children were very keen to celebrate my non-birthday and so we decided that a low key night out all together might be just what the doctor ordered. It was. We made a very happy bunch. I danced with my teenage son before he buggered off to a party and felt comforted in the knowledge that my father would not only want me to be happy but also that maybe I can take my father’s legacy forward and find a way to get my children to enjoy my company from time to time without me having to bribe them to stay (doubtful).
Then last night after my exhausting Eulogy writing day, my brother and sister in law came for dinner. Just low key – we were going through the plans for the funeral. He read my tribute and made comments. SUDDENLY I spotted a teeny weeny white feather stuck on my sister in law’s shirt – right where you would expect her angel wings to grow if she was to have any…..I’ve mentioned white feathers and angels before – when my lovely friend Jo died earlier this year, I found one stuck to my bathroom floor at a key moment.
It looked so sweet sitting there on her shoulder. Stuck in the fabric of the shirt:-
Then my brother and I complained that it wasn’t fair that she had one and we didn’t – even if she clearly was my father’s favourite after her amazing performance last week – then my brother turned around and there stuck to his back was ANOTHER feather – albeit a little bit of a manky one – more chicken wing than angel wing, BUT STILL, better than nothing – WHERE WAS MINE???
THEN my teenage son appeared going “OMG LOOK – I CAN’T BELIEVE IT – I’VE GOT ONE STUCK ON MY FACE” and there, stuck on (albeit with a little bit of sellotape) was indeed yet another white feather:-
Truly a miracle.
This evening I am behaving strangely. My mother just called and my daughter took the call – “sorry Grandma you can’t speak to her, she’s doing a headstand – nope, I have no idea why – she’s gone a bit random and weird”. I actually couldn’t really give my mother an explanation. Just fancied it. Thought it might help fill my brain back up again. But. Now. I think I must have stayed in it too long. My eyes feel like they are going to pop out of my head. Seriously. Sort of fizzy and bulging and worryingly blurry. That can’t be good. My neck is a bit sore. My head hurts a little. I don’t think I’ve done myself any favours.
“Tell me”, said my 10 year old son, half way through his homework tonight, “what was the world like before beans? I really can’t imagine how you or anyone coped without baked beans”…..
A WORLD WITHOUT BEANS?
Perish the thought.
Aren’t I lucky to have children that make me laugh?

November 22, 2010Do you read Addy? She had a white feather appear on her husbands chair shortly after his death.
You are very lucky to have children to make you laugh and presumably in a world without beans they all had a lot more heart disease and trapped wind, as in : beans, beans, good for the heart, the more you f…
