I’ve just been to see “Behind The Candelabra” all about the love life of Liberace. Brilliant acting all round. This is Michael Douglas’s finest hour – to take on the role of such a ridiculously flamboyant character and play it with as much sublety as possible is not easy and it comes across as a rather tragic love story of sorts rather than just gay sex. Matt Damon is absolutely brilliant too and they have created an exceptional biopic that is far more than simply promiscuity and drugs.
Fantastic set all 70’s glamour, a brilliant cast and it was actually a joy to watch. Especially the metamorphosis of Liberace pre and post surgery – the make-up artists surely must be up for an Oscar…Rob Lowe as his plastic surgeon is brilliant – they must have had such a laugh filming it – as my friend said, I bet there is another film in the outtakes.
I understand that the film isn’t being shown in US cinemas – can that really be true??? Come on. That is hardly progressive and to be honest, the film deserves an Oscar so the public need to get behind it and insist it gets shown in the US so that it can win an Academy Award.
Michael has been quoted as saying that he totally got into the role – unlike Matt Damon who had to imagine his wife Catherine during all the kissing scenes, Michael says his mind never strayed “I though of Matt. There was a tenderness about him. The way he kissed”.
Aaaah.
