Statistically, today is apparently the most depressing day of the year. Christmas is over, the weather is crap, we are all rubbish at sticking to our New Year’s Resolutions and we have unprecedented levels of uncertainty about our stability and our economy.
Well as George Bernard Shaw once said:
“A lifetime of happiness! No man alive could bear it: it would be hell on earth”
and as Carl Jung said:
“Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness and the word ‘happiness’ would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness”
So. Tomorrow is another day and we will be a little less depressed than today (a lot less depressed if you are Barack Obama and family).
Apparently friends, family and exercise helps and I generally find that when I’m miserable, eating chocolate, drinking wine, taking it out on my children and generally lowering my expectations of happiness all tend to help. If all else fails, I can usually cheer myself up by going back through my 8 year olds homework book:-
