HOLIDAY IN DUBROVNIK REVIEW

My son has just come back from Croatia so he’s written the post on what he enjoyed whilst out there. I must apologise in advance for one of the photos he has chosen to include – I don’t think it’s reasonable of me to ban!!

It’s so interesting that Croatia has become such a hot spot these days – not too expensive and as yet unspoilt so go quickly, before it changes too much!

Here is a young adults take on Dubrovnik as a holiday destination:-

Just as the Croatians are desperate to join the European Union, so, we Europeans are desperate for a little taste of what Croatia has to offer. Other than a few small music festivals in Croatia, I had never visited another part of the country until recently. I decided to embark on a couples trip to Dubrovnik after hearing wonderful things about the city.

Dubrovnik is a medieval walled city and is well known for its amazingly beautiful orange tiled roofs. We rented an apartment using the website AirBnb (which is fantastic by the way) just outside of the old city walls which worked perfectly. It was extremely peaceful and yet only a two minute walk from all the main action of the city.

Apart from how aesthetically pleasing Dubrovnik was, we went without knowing anything about the city and what to do there. On our first evening, after a lovely meal in a Croatian restaurant just off Stradun (the main street in old town Dubrovnik) we explored Old Town Dubrovnik.

It. Is. Stunning.

Tiny steep side streets winding off Stradun offer amazing restaurants and bars and at the top of the streets you reach the walls of the old town. On day two we walked on the top of the walls which costs 100 Kuna, the equivalent of ten pounds. The view from these heights is breathtaking:

There are a few islands near Dubrovnik which we were told to visit. They are known as the Eliphiti islands and a day trip to tour these islands was only 20 quid a head. This included the boat trip for the day, touring 3 of the islands, a fresh mackerel lunch on board and UNLIMITED WINE. We did notice however that the wine tasted extremely similar to the 5 litre bottle of wine we bought from the local supermarket for the equivalent of 4 pounds. Who would’ve thought that wine could be cheaper than milk?! Apart from a lightning storm which dampened our tour of the final island, it was a great day out and I would highly recommend it.

All the restaurants we ate in were fantastic but there was one which we all thought was outstanding. Lady Pipi Grill which was recommended by the Croatian woman who lived in the flat above us, has a rooftop terrace which overlooks the city and you can watch your fresh seafood being grilled right in front of your eyes. Between the four of us we shared two seafood platters and four litres of wine for only 20 pounds each! During the meal we did have a discussion about where the name ‘Lady Pipi’ came from and no one could come up with a valid explanation until we left and saw this statue:



It is literally a lady having a pipi which, after four litres of wine, we found HILARIOUS.

In our final few days in the city, other than taking the cable car up the mountain to see yet another amazing view, we just wandered the streets of Dubrovnik’s old town to see what it had to offer. We found various bars hidden away just outside the city walls overlooking the ocean. We ate delicious ice cream whilst watching a woman fish on the harbor and feed it to cats. We shopped at the local market. We had the best time ever.

Five days in the beautiful city was the perfect amount of time. We were able to do all the things we wanted but we left wanting more. I’m jealous of anyone who is going to this city in the near future but I would hurry up before more people find out about this hidden gem and prices start to get ridiculous.
