I have just been to a talk at the studio where I teach, by an eminent nutritionist. It was far more interesting than I though it would be. I was worried that I would be told to stop eating and drinking everything I loved and eat green leafy vegetables and nuts at all times and weird drinks. It wasn’t like that at all. She told me loads of things I didn’t know. At one point we all had to inspect our tongues and then she told us lots about our digestion depending on the characteristics of our particular tongue – long, short, thick, thin, pink, purple, coated, serrated, ulcerated…..and so on. For example, did you know that if you have a long, thin pointy tongue you have quite a strong constitution and are unlikely to suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Did you also know that if your skin is dry (like at the back of your arms or top of your hands or on your shins) then the rest of your body including your internal organs will also be. If your brain is dehydrated then you can’t remember things like what you were saying half way through a sentence or where you left your keys and that apparently is nothing to do with old age. That is dehydration. Which is not just about water it is about essential fatty acids, like Omega 3 (and 6, 9 and 12). I am probably now going to have to start taking about 250 supplements.

Woe betide (is that how you write that? I’ve never seen it written down) anyone who has a purple tongue, or a really fat tongue with a line down the middle or a tongue with scalloped edges…..I know what’s wrong with you. I just can’t remember what it is because my brain is dehydrated. If any of you are interested I’ll read my notes and give you a breakdown in due course. x

Good–I was studying to be a nutritionist/registered dietitian, and we watched clips of her show on BBC America in class as an example of what *not* to do! I do remember that she examined tongues, though.
