The coronavirus has the potential to do a huge amount of damage to societies. Here in the UK we are in that very fine line between keeping a cool and level head, carrying on with our lives and our work and only thinking about moving away from the person with a cough on the train, rather than actually doing it- to running around the supermarkets PANICKING that all the loo roll, nappies and dried pasta is about to sell out. Sneaky people have already bought up all the masks on Amazon and from the pharmacies AND all the hand sanitiser without me even noticing AND NOW THERE IS NONE LEFT. Great. WHAT ELSE ARE WE SUPPOSED TO PUT ON OUR FACES? Maybe I need to order a few of those enormous plastic water bottles to put over my head – that way eyes are protected too.
We are possibly only days away from a tipping point and we are all waiting with baited breath (literally). Three more cases in the UK announced this morning and a huge surge in Italy with over 600 people infected. The anxious global public is teetering between cancelling all worldwide events, thus destabilising the already fragile economy and sending us into a world recession and turning our lives upside down for months. Amazing to think such a teeny weeny organism can reap such destruction. My mother is calling it “The Pangolin’s Revenge”.
Has Asia peaked and is now stabilising as we have been led to believe? I bloody hope so. Alarmingly, the first dog has tested positive in Hong Kong – lets hope it’s just in the mouth and nose, caught from an owner who has also tested positive, rather than that it is able to cross contaminate, moving from animals to humans and then back again. Cathay Pacific has cancelled 90% of it’s flights – it is all looking rather bleak, with tough times ahead. What if it sneaks into Africa? A terrifying thought whereby all hell will break loose.
I am doing my bit by trying to keep my children calm, not helped by my daughter telling me every time I comment on reducing my alcohol content or making summer plans that I might as well not bother because we are all going to dead by July.
Scary times…maybe I can just cut some eye holes in my towel:-
