END OF THE WORLD

We had a lovely evening last night out for our Christmas Book Group. We chose a very lively pub in Putney – in fact it’s one I used to go to years ago when I worked for EMI to see really cool bands. Then it closed for ages and now it’s been refurbished and it was not only heaving but really lovely.

The Half Moon Pub in Putney – anyone remember it? Last night The Ruggs were playing to a sold out audience of 300 (I am too old now to know who The Ruggs are) and tomorrow evening they are having an “End Of The World” party…on account of the fact that according to the ancient Mayan civilisation, the end of the world will take place this December.

The 12/12/12 date marks the end of the Mayan calendar, and the world is supposed to end on 21/12/12 – the day of the winter solstice – which will be a little bit disappointing for my son because it’s his birthday.

So, I am slightly in agreement with the UK record label Wall Of Sound which is that if we’re all going to die, we may as well go out in style! So maybe see you there??

Anyway, back to Christmas Book group which was a little more of a sedate affair tucked around the corner. The food was good, we all loved our “When I lived in Modern Times” book by Linda Grant – especially my friend who is off to Israel for five days today and even more especially because two of the girls around the table are friends because they met on a Kibbutz over thirty years ago. I was fascinated to read about the kibbutz life style – hadn’t realised quite how utilitarian it is/was.

Next we are reading Hilary Mantel’s “Wolf Hall” which is going to be a challenge – so we will probably have to delay meeting up until the summer at this rate – too much going on to be able to read.
