My kitchen is a battlefield. I can barely cope. It’s so stressful. New kitten is trying very hard to ingratiate himself with grumpy old female cat and it is not working at all. I can’t keep them in the same room for any length of time because grumpy old cat spends her whole time either hissing or doing a low level growl at him. He’s pretty brave – keeps going back for more but I just don’t know what to do….she really looks like she might kill him. Definitely “Fear and Loathing” in my kitchen.
Will she ever accept him? Anybody know a good cat whisperer?? Or got any good advice?
I mean seriously – you really wouldn’t want to mess with her would you:-

January 8, 2012I say let them sort it out for themselves. In the end my grumpy old girl got used to being pounced on all the while by the kitten. they still fight sometimes but actually the grumpy one seems to have softened a bit. Cats are very good at working it out for themselves in the end. That little thing is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too cute!

January 8, 2012I’m just not sure I dare but that’s the advice I’ve been given by others – shut them in a room together…..seems a little harsh – think better to do it a little at a time? That’s what I’m going to try anyway…Lx

January 9, 2012Let them be. I’ve just gone through this with my cranky old tom cat and a new puppy. The poor puppy was only 5 wks old when I got her, so quite defenceless. After 3 (LONG) weeks and a few yelps from the dog (sharp claws on that cat) the cat is now letting the dog lick his ears while they wait for their dinner.
Progress! As long as the dog doesn’t eat the cat when she gets bigger. And bigger she will get, her doggy dad comes up to my waist.

January 9, 2012I once heard that it could help to put tuna juice on the newcomer – the old cat just won’t be able to help herself and will lick it off! I’d give that a little research before trying it myself, though. Good luck – those pictures made me laugh out loud! What a contrast between mean old mama cat and the wide eyed wonder of the little one.
