I am beginning to get into the festive spirit.  Sort of.  It’s my son’s birthday tomorrow so that blocks my Christmas flow temporarily….the ongoing drama about his party ensues – at the moment it’s at his dad’s house but with RULES he doesn’t like and he’s trying very hard to persuade me to have it here instead.

In the meantime, I was wondering whether I should be making things – that would probably help me get into the spirit of Christmas.  I don’t really get the whole making the Christmas cake thing though – why would I want to spend months fiddling about with bottles of brandy and revolting sheets of marzipan when I dislike the finished result anyway.  I could try and make my own crackers like my mother used to but frankly what’s the point?  Loads of bits of cardboard and glue and bangy things and then I have to go out and buy loads of little presents and well, they just seemed to take forever, I remember her starting in about September. Mince pies?  Better in Waitrose, although my youngest has a plan to devastate my kitchen some time this week by making his own.  I don’t even make my own brandy butter.  Rubbish.  What shall I make that will make me feel festive and Christmassy?  Ideas please.

I have been reading my friend in Australia’s blog.  She’s gone to Hamilton Island to meet another friend. They are going to have dinner with Ben, the blogger who won “The Best Job In The World” campaign.  He’s about to finish his year long stint as “caretaker” of the island and fly off to the states to be interviewed by Oprah.  It all sounds amazing…but in her blog she says she is really missing the build up to Christmas here in the UK and all the carol concerts and get togethers we have.    I was at one of those lovely family orientated Christmas drinks party with lots of old good friends last night. Her complaint reminded me how lucky I am to have so many great friends.  She is enjoying where she is but says that her parties just don’t have the “edge” – whatever that means.

Although I spoke to one woman who told me a friend of hers has just married the vicar who originally married her to her first husband.  Same woman also told me another of her friends has just been arrested for having sex with someone in her car in a park.  How embarrassing.  Maybe that is what she means by the “edge”, but I’m not sure I want to be arrested before Christmas….

Two of our children have birthdays in December, turns the whole month into one long trauma for The Children’s Mother. Of course I do my best to give her the support she needs at this time, I know how to work the bottle opener…!!!

Apart from wearing a Santa hat on Christmas morning and embarrassing the children (as well as the dogs, so they tell me), I am pretty useless at Christmas. Being an atheist doesn’t help I suppose!

It has to be said, your friend knows some pretty interesting people…..the vicar wasn’t in the car was he?

Hope the birthday party goes well, rules included?? If only we all started thinking about mince pies in September, as we can’t buy any in our local shops, nor can you buy the fruit mince, especially the closer it gets to Christmas! If I could remember to buy some in about May, or whenever the jars make a brief appearance on the shelves…
